CELEBRATING 30 YEARS OF FINE
MUSIC, PROFESSIONAL EDUCATION
AND GREAT PARTIES!
It’s Birthday Time and we’re in the party spirit, with a gala celebration coming up in July -- it’s the 2008 BDAA Convention and we're back in Reno!
Dear members and friends of the BDAA --
Zeny and I invite you to attend the 30th annual convention of the BDAA. Thirty years of coming together to learn about and play music is an occasion to celebrate! We encourage all of you to join us in Reno for this special event. With all of you in attendance, we can make this the Biggest BDAA Convention in the “Biggest Little City in the World”.
We are excited about this year’s convention, and we want to share our excitement and enthusiasm with you. Come to Reno and we’ll show you a great time! Listed below are some highlights of the convention. We look forward to seeing each and everyone!

Convention Coordinators

LOCATION: The Reno-Tahoe area is one of the most beautiful areas in the country, with loads of activities to get involved in all year around! From Reno to Lake Tahoe, San Francisco to Yosemite, the area is rich in places to explore. Reno has a great nightlife, too! Shows, restaurants, casinos offer music, dancing, and excellent food. Reno’s altitude of 4400 feet along with its arid climate makes both high and low temperatures comfortable. Summer days should be warm and dry.
ACCOMMODATIONS: In the heart of the “Biggest Little City in the World,” Harrah’s Reno first opened in 1943 as a bingo parlor. In 1969 it became Harrah’s and was Reno’s first casino. In 1998 the hotel underwent renovations and now occupies space on both sides of North Center Street.
Harrah’s is well known for its elegant and comfortable accommodations. Guest room amenities include cable television, air conditioning, maid service, hair dryer, iron/ironing board, and more. The Business Center, located in the Convention Center lobby, is open Monday through Friday, providing easy access for faxing, copies, computer use, Internet access, and shipping assistance.
Harrah’s has everything you might need -- seven quality restaurants, including the award winning Steak House, men’s and women’s health clubs, swimming pool, spa, gift shop, 24-hour room service, complimentary valet parking and free airport shuttle.
Come a day early if you like, or stay a day or two after the convention. Our BDAA rates are good for Saturday, July 12 and Sunday-Monday, July 21 and 21. Reserve rooms now.
OUR GUEST ARTISTS: Not three but six of the world’s greatest Russian musicians will be featured at the convention. They include Alexander Tsygankov, domra; Inna Shevchenko, piano; Valery Zazhigin, balalaika; Larisa Gottlieb, piano; Vyatcheslav Semyonov, bayan; and Natalia Semyonova, domra.
“Sasha” Tsygankov will also conduct the BDAA Festival Orchestra, assisted by Maxwell McCullough, our Executive Director and music director of the Washington Balalaika Society.
WELCOME PARTY: The Welcome Party will be held on Sunday, July 13th at the National Automobile Museum (The Harrah Collection). Festivities will begin at 8:00 pm and continue until 11:00 pm. Music, desserts, intriguing automobiles all await you as you stroll down period street scenes. The museum is at 10 South Lake Street, within walking distance of our hotel.
BANQUET AND AUCTION: The banquet and auction will be held Friday night July 18th in the Prospectors’ Club at Harrah’s. Harrah’s catering team of noted chefs is creating a special menu just for us. Auctioneer Richard Baranko reminds us to be sure to bring along an item or two for the Auction -- treasures that you can live without but someone else cannot! And don’t forget your checkbook. It’s for a good cause -- the BDAA Scholarship Fund.

WORKSHOPS will include balalaika (Valery Zazhigin, Andrei Saveliev, Judy Sherman), domra (Natasha Semyonova, Svetlana Nikonova), bayan (Slava Semyonov), contrabass balalaika (Marvin Paioff), arranging for orchestra, folk percussion, jamming, chorus (Tamara Ancite), balalaika history (Francis Kosheleff), Russian art (Sasha Moore) -- that’s the lineup so far and it’s only March! Plus a daily workshop for Children (ages 6 - 13). This year, we are waiving convention registration fees for children 13 and under, so think about bringing the family!
Welcome back, Natasha Lozovsky Burns! Natasha will lead our Choreographed Dance program. More details on the BDAA website as they become available. Dancers -- think Reno! Recreational folk dancers can also enjoy instruction and music for popular traditional folk dances at our evening parties.
Cooks and willing assistants are encouraged to join Sandy Kasura’s elite team to help prepare delectables for our now-legendary Steve Wolownik Memorial Zakuski Night. We also hear strong rumors of another flavored-vodka-tasting event which will doubtless require assistance in preparation, including testing of the products prior to serving. Someone has to do it.
EVENING ENTERTAINMENT: Evening parties will begin between 9:00 pm and 9:30 pm. There will be mini-concerts, an open-mike night and this year, “Cossack Poetry Night”. Refreshments will be served. Jam sessions will commence immediately after the scheduled entertainment, kicked off by the BDAA’s master jamsters.
Attention groups, soloists and other performers: If you are attending the convention and would like to perform at an evening mini-concert or other convention venue, please let us know by May 15th so we can plan accordingly. Thank you!
You don’t have to be a soloist to play in the evening jam sessions -- everyone is welcome, and we’ll pay special attention this year to facilitating participation by all who wish to join in the fun!
DAY OFF: There’s much to do in the Reno/Tahoe area. You can visit Lake Tahoe, historic Carson City, Virginia City and Truckee. There’s hiking, museums, and whitewater rafting along the Truckee River. You can drive into the desert, casino hop, or just relax!
CONCERTS: In conjunction with Artown, a month-long celebration held annually in July in Reno, some of our musicians will present an hour-long concert Sunday July 13th at 6:00 pm in Wingfield Park. The event is free and open to the public.
The BDAA Festival Concert will be held Saturday night at Nightingale Hall on the University of Nevada - Reno campus. The hall is an “acoustic delight,” just the venue to showcase our special guest artists and other talented musicians and our wonderful BDAA Festival Orchestra. Transportation will be provided for musicians to and from the concert hall.
FESTIVAL ORCHESTRA MUSIC has been mailed to those who registered prior to May 15. A second mailing will be sent to those who register by Friday, June 13. You’ll be glad you got it early -- Maestro Tsygankov has prepared a superb program, and there are some challenging pieces this year that you’ll want to practice before you come to Reno!
Musicians whose registration forms are not received by June 13 will receive their music at the registration desk in Reno.
REGISTRATION FORMS are available here. It’s very helpful to us in our planning to have people register early, so please think about filling these out and mailing them off to us soon!
TIMELY ADDITIONAL INFORMATION will be available on an ongoing basis at www.bdaa.com
TELL YOUR FRIENDS -- SPREAD THE WORD
These annual conferences of ours are an undiscovered treasure for many people who would love the experience if they only knew about them. All are welcome, and our registration rates are one of the best bargains around for the entertainment, education and fellowship we deliver.
SEE YOU IN RENO!
